Locks of Love – Symbols of Eternal Love Worldwide

The practice has also gained sudden popularity in Tokyo, Japan among young couples, and padlocks are appearing all over the city, especially around teen hang outs.

Love padlocks are a custom by which sweethearts affix padlocks to a fence or similar public fixture to symbolise their love. There is a tradition… a lock have to mounted on the bridge and then you have to throw the key into the Rhine.Then, the relationship will last forever. So of course many couples do that. Since 2008, love locks have started appearing on the Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne, Germany. The bridge is 409.19 meters long and is full of these locks between the sidewalk and the tracks. Deutsche Bahn, the bridge’s operator, threatened to have the locks removed, but relented in the face of public opposition.

Love padlocks can be found on a small pedestrian bridge over a sidearm of Vltava in front of a water wheel. The name of the street is “Velkoprevorske Namesti”. This trend, in Prague, was started by the now infamous Glen Emery of Jo’s Bar fame

Love padlocks are attached to the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor bridge and on the Pont de l’Archevêché in Paris. As of May 2010, padlocks have been cut off the Pont des Arts bridge.
